Theatre-Park

Theatre-Park
1983

Moscow Art Center

The site should be chosen in the environs of a city in a Third World country. The site formerly used for the performance of rites should be situated near a body of water. The Park Theater is created over several years as a monument to the past shows. Before the arrival of a guest company the site is surrounded by a fence and a small hotel is built for actors in the entrance square. The theater/park is built of local materials by local theater fans. The company brings stage sets along and assembles them in the open air.
After the end of guest performance elements of the stage set become a monument to the theater of another nation. Local residents can use them as a site of festivals, rallies and shows.
With time, all sections of the park become filled, forming a theater/park along the green amphitheater/foyer. The theater/park is ready when a national theater, combining traits from cultures of the host country and other nations, is finished. Timber, boulders and trees are the principal building materials used. The establishment of the theater/park promotes cultural contacts and develops the role of the theater as a space for communication.
